All of our SelfDesign High courses are certified by the B.C. Ministry of Education, and are free to youth that are residents of British Columbia. Our courses are peace-focused, flexible, learner-centered and continuously evolve through the engagement of learners and mentors. Many of our courses are *Waldorf inspired.
*Learning is interdisciplinary, integrating practical, artistic, and conceptual elements. The Waldorf approach emphasizes the role of the imagination, developing thinking that includes a creative as well as an analytic component. source
We all know the expression “it takes a village to raise a child”. Well, there’s another side to that and it’s: “It takes the youth to create a school”. Our youth are our inspiration and raison d’etre and now is the time to celebrate their graduation from high school. Each of our learners has shown us something especial about both who they are and want to become and as well, about what our village needs.
Our vision at SelfDesign High has been to create the grounds where passions and curiosity can take root. Whether this shows up in Principles Math 11, Social Studies 10 or in Street Art, we have witnessed some amazing sparks fly. What our grads have shown us is that they are thoughtful, resourceful and creative learners by design. They are ready to move into new experiences and ways of being and will bring fresh inspiration and perspective to the village – both local and global. They may have to tackle a variety of challenges but we have no doubt that they have the courage and insight to meet them. Their future and ours are in very good hands.
On Saturday June 19th, we celebrated all of the young people graduating this year. Our celebration began with a beautiful sweat lodge ceremony in the morning. The afternoon included a ceremony at our Nelson Learning Centre followed by a potluck and an energetic street dance. The evening concluded back at the sweat lodge site with a magical evening of songs and stories around a campfire. A heartfelt thank you to everyone celebrating with us.
